In 2017 ALEMBIC headed north from Sausalito, CA to Port Townsend, WA for a multi-year refit.

This included replacing the stem, rebuilding damaged deadwood in the keel, rudderpost, and a new rudder.

Multiple frame ends were replaced, along with the top 12” of the hull planking. The foredeck framing and decking was rebuilt to accept a new windlass.

New Sapele toe rails and Dorade boxes were installed, and a new Sapele skin installed over the cockpit coaming and cabinsides.

A portion of the mast (~30%) was rebuilt, including a new fiddlehead and rebuilt spreaders.

The standing and running rigging were replaced along with a new jib furler.

The winch package was updated and a new (to us) suit of sails was brought aboard. A new boom was built and installed, and a circa-1960s helm was acquired, modified, and installed.

The electronics package was updated and ALEMBIC now has a new battery bank, power distribution panel, and wiring.

She was refastened below the waterline and is under a new full canvas cover, including custom toe rail covers.

In 2025, she was repowered with a new Beta 43 hp diesel engine.

In 2026, ALEMBIC was hauled out to have 14 frames replaced.

Originally lightly framed to minimize weight, the old frames had lost their structural integrity and the strip-built hull was showing the effects of frame deterioration.

ALEMBIC now has double sawn purpleheart frames and positive attachment between the bulkhead and bronze floors. All work performed by Robert d’Arcy Marine Services.

Frames installed and bilge painted before stringer installed and water tanks re-installed.

After the framing was completed, the exterior was tightened up with splining.

While hauled out, a new Max-Prop was installed and the mast and spreaders were varnished with additional coats of Awlwood.

After 5 months on the hard, ALEMBIC successfully splashed after stepping the mast.

In 2027 ALEMBIC will get a new mainsail and a lazy jack system.
